Simon Brunner

Senior Associate

Simon Brunner joined Flagship Pioneering in 2021 and works on venture creation at the interface of biology, genomics and data science. In his role, he works as part of a venture-creation team to develop the science, intellectual property, and business strategy that form the foundation of the firm’s next generation of groundbreaking biotechnology platform companies.

Before joining Flagship, Simon was co-founder and CEO of Mu Genomics, a cancer diagnostics startup that focused on using whole-genome sequencing and data science to radically improve the lives of patients through personalized treatment selection. Prior to Mu Genomics, Simon was a Lead Data Scientist and Project Leader at the Boston Consulting Group’s GAMMA data science practice. He led data science teams and projects for major Healthcare players, including BCG’s biopharma and health insurance clients, improving access to care, as well as driving impact for drug launch and commercialization.

Simon holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Cambridge and a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Systems Biology from ETH Zurich. After his Ph.D., Simon was a postdoctoral fellow at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, pioneering new approaches to study the genomes of disease tissue. His work resulted in multiple publications, including articles in Nature, Nature Genetics and Nature Methods.
