Frederico Lourenco

Fred Lourenco joined Flagship Pioneering in 2023 as Vice President of Portfolio Strategy and Operations. At Flagship, Fred works as part of the entrepreneurial team of scientists and venture creators under the leadership of Avak Kahvejian, shaping strategic and operational priorities for multiple breakthrough startups.  

Fred brings a strong entrepreneurial spirit and depth of business and operational experience to this role. He joined Flagship from Rubius Therapeutics, where he led a range of strategic of operational efforts, specifically early Clinical Development strategy and target product profile (TPP) development, preclinical portfolio optimization, business development, and competitive intelligence. Prior to Rubius, Fred served in a global role at Alexion Pharmaceuticals, as launch readiness lead for all new assets and/or new rare disease indications.  

Fred was previously an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company where he worked with the world’s top biopharma and medical devices companies on a wide range of R&D, commercial, organizational, and M&A topics to help them bring innovative solutions to patients and create value for shareholders. Prior to joining McKinsey, he co-founded Repairogen, a cosmeceutical startup aiming to develop the first DNA repair-based anti-aging product.  

Fred holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Weill Cornell Medicine and a B.Sc./M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
