Eric Topol, M.D., joined Flagship Pioneering in 2026 as an Academic Advisor, working with Flagship’s Preemptive Health and Medicine initiative to help guide scientific strategy and advance new approaches for predicting, detecting, and preventing disease. A globally recognized physician-scientist, Eric has been a leading voice in advancing more precise, proactive models of care that move medicine upstream—from treating disease to preserving health.

Eric is Executive Vice President of Scripps Research and founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, which he established in 2007 to accelerate the use of genomics, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence to improve human health. A practicing cardiologist and internationally recognized physician-scientist, he has been a leading voice in advancing individualized, data-driven medicine.

Previously, Eric served as chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, where he led the cardiology program to become the top-ranked heart center in the United States. While at Cleveland Clinic, he also founded the Lerner College of Medicine, an innovative medical school designed to train physician-scientists. He has also advised health systems globally, including leading an independent review commissioned by the United Kingdom government on the future of the National Health Service.

Eric has authored more than 1,300 peer-reviewed publications and is among the most highly cited researchers in medicine. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and serves as principal investigator on major National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants focused on advancing innovations to improve human health.

He is the author of four bestselling books on the future of medicine, including The Creative Destruction of Medicine, The Patient Will See You Now, Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again, and Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach to Longevity. In 2024, Dr. Topol was named to the inaugural TIME100 Health list of the world’s most influential people in health. In 2025, he was recognized among the 25 Best Leaders in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
