Byung Geon (BG) Rhee

Byung Geon (BG) Rhee joined Flagship Pioneering in 2025 as Special Advisor in South Korea. In this role, BG supports the development of partnerships that advance Flagship’s mission and portfolio in South Korea and will strengthen the company’s presence across the Asia-Pacific region.   

BG brings to Flagship nearly four decades of corporate leadership and public service in biotech, innovation, and life sciences. Most recently, BG served as Chairman and CEO of GI Innovation, where he oversaw the development of several clinical projects and a successful IPO. BG previously served as CEO of several pharma companies and biotechnology ventures in Korea, including Green Cross Corporation, and was Chairman of Korea BIO. He is currently a member of the High-Tech Strategic Industry Committee in Korea, serves as Chairman of the Korea Support Committee for the International Vaccine Institute, is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering in Korea, and is an Advisory Board Member of the Johns Hopkins University Biotechnology Innovation Center.

BG holds a B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University, a Ph.D. in Chemical/Biomedical Engineering from Rice University, as well as a postdoctoral position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
