Arturo Vegas

Arturo Vegas joined Flagship Pioneering in 2025 and serves as a Senior Principal, where he works with entrepreneurial scientists to create and grow first-in-class platforms at the interface of drug discovery, drug delivery, agriculture, and sustainability. 

Before joining Flagship, Arturo was the Peter Paul Career Development Professor at Boston University, appointed in the Department of Chemistry with affiliations in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Materials Science and Engineering Division. His lab focused on developing novel approaches for drug discovery and drug delivery. He was a core faculty member of the BU Center for Molecular Discovery, the BU Nanotechnology Innovation Center, the Biological Design Center, and was Co-Director of the Translational Research in Biomaterials Training Program. He received national awards such as the New Innovator Type 1 Diabetes Pathfinder Award by the NIH and an Innovator Award by the JDRF. Arturo has been an innovator at the interface of both human health and agriculture. He was a co-founder of Sigilon Therapeutics, a Flagship company which developed novel cell-based therapies, and Preceres LLC, which focused on developing RNA-delivery technology for agriculture.  

Arturo received his B.A. in Biology from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University. His doctoral studies under the direction of Professor Stuart Schreiber at Harvard focused on developing novel drug-like compounds that modulate chromatin-modifying enzymes, now popular targets for cancer therapeutics. His postdoctoral work with Professors Robert Langer and Daniel G. Anderson at MIT led to the development of new materials for cell encapsulation, cell-based therapies, and nucleic acid delivery. His work has been published in multiple journals, including Nature Biotechnology and Nature Medicine, and has led to 15 patents, both issued and pending.
