Hok Hei Tam is a Science Partner at Flagship Pioneering, where he originates platform companies and leads scientific efforts spanning human health, agriculture, and sustainability. He also serves as Chief Technology Officer at Montai Therapeutics.
Hok Hei is an experienced founder and technologist with a focus on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to transform nature’s innovations into products. As co-founder and CTO at Montai Therapeutics, he led the development of the CONECTA® AI platform that underpins Montai’s programs that are advancing to the clinic. As co-founder and CTO at Invaio Sciences, he led the development of AI approaches to finding new biological crop protection solutions. Hok Hei also co-founded and developed key technologies at Inari Agriculture, Terrana Biosciences, and Senda Biosciences (now Sail Biomedicines).
Hok Hei’s work has led to 21 patent families and 20 publications, including in PNAS, Nature Materials, Nature Biotechnology, and Nature Medicine. He was also named to BioSpace’s inaugural 40 under 40 class.
With a background in chemical engineering and mathematics, Hok Hei earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from MIT in the laboratories of Daniel Anderson and Robert Langer, where his research was supported by an NSF fellowship. Two of the projects he worked on became companies. Outside of the lab, Hok Hei also led the development and deployment of a cloud-based electronic medical record system for Syrian refugees with chronic diseases in Lebanon.
