Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy joined Flagship Pioneering 2021 as a Senior Director of Cloud Architecture. He provides expert guidance to Flagship companies around all aspects of cloud computing and leads the development of next-generation data and scientific computing platforms. Sean’s passion is capturing and taming the complexity of biology with computational methods at scale.

Sean joined Flagship from Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he was Senior Solutions Architect for Healthcare and Life Sciences Startups. While at AWS, Sean was a leading member of the Life Sciences Technical Field Community, where he specialized in AI/ML Deep Phenotyping and Data Lake architectures and provided thought leadership to over 400 startups. Prior to AWS, Sean was the Director of Scientific Computing for the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), where his team worked alongside 800 research staff and developed novel architectures for scaling optogenetic imaging pipelines to support millions of samples. Before HHMI, Sean was Software Engineering Lead for metagenomics annotation pipelines at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), and Senior Software Engineer at Celera Genomics.

Sean has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Yale University, and undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Biology from MIT.
