Ben Portney joined Flagship Pioneering after completing the summer Fellows Program in 2018. At Flagship, Ben works as part of a venture-creation team to develop the science, intellectual property, and business strategy that form the foundation of the firm’s next generation of breakthrough startups.
Before joining Flagship, Ben earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. For his dissertation research, Ben investigated epigenetic mechanisms behind cancer stem cell survival, replicative immortality, and therapeutic resistance. His work resulted in multiple pending patents and academic publications.
While a graduate student, Ben was selected as a University of Maryland President’s Entrepreneurship Fellow. His work resulted in new entrepreneurship focused curricula and the launch of a campus incubation space. Beyond his academic work, Ben interned for several biotech companies and co-founded a startup focused on regenerative medicine.
In addition to his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Ben also holds a B.S in General Biology from the University of Maryland, College Park.
